Bacterias fijadoras de nitrógeno: una alternativa sostenible para los agricultores del Mar Menor

In recent years, farmers in the Murcia region have faced major challenges linked to the environmental crisis of the Mar Menor. Restrictions on the use of nitrogen fertilizers, combined with the heavy rains of early 2025, have caused severe nitrogen leaching, leaving soils with low available nitrogen levels during the critical vegetative growth stages.

The challenge: maintaining productivity without harming the environment

Stricter regulations and extreme weather events have forced farmers to seek more efficient and sustainable solutions. The goal is no longer only to produce more, but to do so while preserving the ecosystem’s balance. In this context, nitrogen-fixing bacteria have become a key biotechnological tool to reduce dependence on traditional chemical fertilizers.

How nitrogen-fixing bacteria work

These microorganisms capture atmospheric nitrogen (N₂) and convert it into ammonium (NH₄⁺), a form that plants can absorb, thanks to the enzyme nitrogenase. They also improve the rhizosphere, stimulate root development, and increase the availability of blocked nutrients in the soil. Among the most effective genera are Azospirillum, Rhizobium, and Frankia, although recent research has highlighted the potential of Pseudomonas and Paenibacillus in non-legume crops.

AFEPASA: biological innovation for sustainable agriculture

Responding to these challenges, AFEPASA has developed a range of biofertilizers that combine agronomic efficiency with environmental responsibility. Nitrocracin is a liquid formulation containing Azospirillum brasilense, Pseudomonas putida, and Paenibacillus polymyxa, designed to fix atmospheric nitrogen and improve the solubilization of phosphorus and other soil nutrients. Regular application strengthens root systems, stimulates beneficial microbial activity, and optimizes nutrient use efficiency.

Meanwhile, Vitacracin acts as a plant bio-stimulant, enhancing nutrient assimilation and resistance to abiotic stress. Ferticracin, in turn, improves soil structure, nutrient retention, and overall plant vitality, promoting balanced and sustained growth.

Towards a regenerative production model

The shift toward sustainable agriculture does not mean sacrificing productivity—it means adopting solutions that integrate biological efficiency and environmental care. Products like Nitrocracin, Vitacracin, and Ferticracin provide farmers in the Mar Menor region with real tools to maintain crop profitability while contributing to the restoration of a unique and valuable ecosystem.
